Why I love Coaching

I never wanted to be a figure skating coach.  It is just something that I started to do when I turned 16 to help pay for my ice time and my lessons.  And then I continued to do it to support myself when I went to college.  Now I am living in Alaska, and I still find myself coaching. Maybe I do like this coaching thing after all.

I think I like it best because I get to interact with so many people.  I teach Learn-to-Skate lessons at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and the kids that I have met and skated with have just about melted my heart.  I love them so much.  For example, at the end of the most recent session, one of my students ran up to me before class and handed me a picture she had colored.  On the bottom of the page she wrote, "I like you. Laura."  Seriously the cutest thing ever!

Another wonderful moment that happened more than once occurred as I was walking out of the rink to my car.  As I walked across the parking lot I heard "Hi Coach Jenessa!"  As I turned my head towards the voice, I saw two of my skaters (ages 4 & 6) leaning out of their father's truck waving to me.  That put a big smile on my face for the rest of the night.

I want to be a positive influence in my skaters's lives. I want to help them achieve their goals.  I am not the perfect coach, but I am learning and improving my abilities every day.  And when my skaters say hi to me or tell me that they like me, I feel a small sense of achievement in making someone else happy that day.  I just hope that I can always reach out to those I meet and work with!!

  1. You are a positive influence in all things. Not just coaching. You are pretty fantastic and I like you even if you don't coach me.

  2. Any time you have the chance to make someone smile, always take it. As you well know, smiles are contagious.

Hoping for a Rainbow

I'm really not sure if I ever thought this day would come. The day that I made it past 13 weeks pregnant without losing the baby. #miracle.  I know I am not out of the woods yet, and honestly, when are we really? I am just trying to live every day with gratitude for the life inside of me, living with hope for the future.  Part of me wanted to wait until next week, when I was past 14 weeks and officially in the 2nd trimester, but I couldn't wait any longer. I've been getting a little thick in the middle, which is getting more difficult to hide, and I feel like I haven't been able to be completely honest with friends when they would ask, "how are you doing?" All I wanted to talk about was how nauseous I was or how nervous I felt. So now, the news is out, whether or not you already suspected something was up.  Seriously though, the 1st trimester is not for the faint of heart! There were many instances when I thought I would lose the baby, but dee...

Dear Adelai |2 Years|: We've Got This

Dear Adelai, As I compiled your pictures from this past year for your album on the eve of your 2nd birthday, I realized it was impossible to include every one. You are beautiful, sassy, and extremely photogenic. It has been a beautiful year as I've watched you grow. You amaze your Dad every day by how much you love books and recognize and know your ABCs, 123s, and basic colors, and I have to agree with him. I love that you are potty trained both day and night, but unfortunately you haven't learned how to sleep through the night yet.  My favorite thing about you right now is how excited you are to meet your baby brother. You challenge me to be more patient and more loving each day, especially as you've begun to realize your autonomy.  While I am not the perfect mother, Heavenly Father is a perfect father and He will always direct your paths as he has mine. Always trust in Him. We've got this, dear daughter. Together with Heavenly Father, your life will be a...

Backpacking, Bears, and Blueberries

Don't mind the crooked picture. The rock obviously needs to practice his photography skills! The weekend forecasted temperatures in the mid to high-70s.  Yes, summer decided to stay for at least one more weekend, so we had to take advantage of it.  Only in Alaska do you take advantage of every summery moment, and dread winter when it is only August 10th, while those in the lower 48 are suffering the worst drought the United States has seen in years. So after work on Friday afternoon, we drove an hour north of Fairbanks to the Chena Recreation area and began our 15 mile hike of Granite Tors.  We made it an overnight backpacking trip so that we would be able to enjoy ourselves a little more.  This was my first backpacking trip in about 5 years, so I was pretty excited.  Lucky for me, my husband is a stud when it comes to camping/hiking stuff, and he packed my pack for me, so I didn't have to worry about it. 15 miles ma...
