Dear Adelai | 3 Months | : Not A Newborn Anymore

Dear Adelai,

This morning I put away all of your 0-3 month clothes and organized your 3-6 month outfits. These onesies that looked so large just one month ago are now fitting you marvelously. In a way it seems like an eternity that you were born, while at the same time these past 13 weeks have flown by. I guess that means I am soaking it up and enjoying the moment.

You're not so little anymore, though you're not so big either. The cuddle bug you were just a few weeks ago has evolved into a girl who loves to see the world. You're most happy when you are standing with just the assistance of a couple of handholds, when you are on the changing table watching your mobile, or when someone is talking to you.

Oh, and your smile! One of my favorite memories from this month was when we were at the store and you talked to both of the cash register ladies. You stood up on the checkout counter and told the sweet elderly ladies all about your life and wooed them with your sweet open-mouth smile and coos. Please stay sweet forever.

I still wear you on my chest for walks or cleaning, but your desire to be confined to the carrier or stroller is slowly fading. You just want to be able to move!

Happy three months, daughter. You are no longer a newborn.

Love,
Mom

Hoping for a Rainbow

I'm really not sure if I ever thought this day would come. The day that I made it past 13 weeks pregnant without losing the baby. #miracle.  I know I am not out of the woods yet, and honestly, when are we really? I am just trying to live every day with gratitude for the life inside of me, living with hope for the future.  Part of me wanted to wait until next week, when I was past 14 weeks and officially in the 2nd trimester, but I couldn't wait any longer. I've been getting a little thick in the middle, which is getting more difficult to hide, and I feel like I haven't been able to be completely honest with friends when they would ask, "how are you doing?" All I wanted to talk about was how nauseous I was or how nervous I felt. So now, the news is out, whether or not you already suspected something was up.  Seriously though, the 1st trimester is not for the faint of heart! There were many instances when I thought I would lose the baby, but dee...

The Love of a Cousin

Swimming Babes-2006 " What do I do when I get pregnant again?"   I asked. My sweet cousin was on the other end of the phone call when I sought out her wisdom and support.  3 years younger than me, she is in her 3rd pregnancy and ready to deliver her first baby in less than 2 months. She was the first person I wanted to talk to when I miscarried the first time, just 2 months after her ectopic pregnancy back in the spring of 2015. For some reason, I just had this connection to her, like maybe because she was born in the same generation as me and going through similar circumstances, that she would understand. Now, 13 months after my first miscarriage, I find myself going through mental exercises every day to prepare myself to trust my body for my 4th and hopefully successful pregnancy; part of that exercise today was to call my cousin up and have a nice chat about our lives and try to get some insights. We were both strong-headed children growing up--often getting ups...

Backpacking, Bears, and Blueberries

Don't mind the crooked picture. The rock obviously needs to practice his photography skills! The weekend forecasted temperatures in the mid to high-70s.  Yes, summer decided to stay for at least one more weekend, so we had to take advantage of it.  Only in Alaska do you take advantage of every summery moment, and dread winter when it is only August 10th, while those in the lower 48 are suffering the worst drought the United States has seen in years. So after work on Friday afternoon, we drove an hour north of Fairbanks to the Chena Recreation area and began our 15 mile hike of Granite Tors.  We made it an overnight backpacking trip so that we would be able to enjoy ourselves a little more.  This was my first backpacking trip in about 5 years, so I was pretty excited.  Lucky for me, my husband is a stud when it comes to camping/hiking stuff, and he packed my pack for me, so I didn't have to worry about it. 15 miles ma...
